On Saturday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed their version of the energy bill. While the Senate's included a measure that required 35 mpg CAFE standards, the House version does not. Instead, the bill supports biofuels, renewable energy and programs to increase energy efficiency. For example, all electric utilities will have to produce 15 percent of their power from renewable sources like wind, solar or biomass by 2020. The House also repealed oil and gas industry tax breaks worth $16 billion. This money will go to greener energy programs.
As we've been reporting, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been against the 35 mpg standard because she wanted to pass a bill quickly. She got her wish, now we have to see how the House and Senate bill reconcile and what the American people will get from this massive shift in energy legislation
